Friends - Lesson #581

This entry was actually written on 2/27/10, but never published due to the fact that I could not find the pictures that I wanted to go with the entry. So here it is. Some things have changed....like Luke is not potty trained, no more pull-ups, etc. but my feelings about friends are still the same. I still feel exactly the same way today as I did on 2/27/10. I think I will feel exactly the same way on 2/27/50. :)

"'Good friends are like stars......You don't always see them,

but they are always there."

Dearest Joshua and Luke,

Both of you know that each month, I spend two hours after school meeting Susy at Applebees for catching up on each other's lives. (Sometimes Lana comes, too which makes it an extra special treat.) I am so lucky that I have had a lot of really good friends through the years. Great friends I grew up with, wonderful friends when Daddy and I were first married, when I started teaching, etc. There are wonderful people and friends that I have met in various phases of my life. Susy is an exceptional one.

First of all, it is difficult for me to take the time away from you at home. Might I add, that neither of you make it easy for me, but I know that some day you will understand the importance of this friendship. Susy was teaching first grade when I got hired to teach first grade as her teaching partner. From the first time I met her, she was a true professional in every sense of the word. She was an excellent role model for the teaching profession (and still is!). I am sure that is what immediately drew me to her. Susy has made me a better teacher and person (something friends often do). We are opposites in a lot of ways and have lived such different lives, but somehow we are almost always in sync. I miss not being a part of her daily life when we worked together, but, I know we can pick up right where we left off even if we have not seen each other for months. And every time I leave Applebees, I am in a great mood for days afterwards. It has been so much fun catching up on each other's lives and talking about the future. Even though I do not see Susy as much as I used to, I feel extremely blessed to have her in my life. I know there will be a day when there will be more time for big girl beverages, lodge meetings, afternoons by the pool, and time to do even more together.

You both are working so hard at developing friendships. Please remember the golden rule - to treat others as you would want to be treated. Be aware of other people's feelings and work diligently to make everyone feel included. Especially watch out for those people around you that need a friend and be a friend to them. Smile a lot, too. People like to be around other people that smile. And listen to others (don't always do all of the talking), be honest and respectful to your friends, and always be there for them especially if they are sad, mad, etc.

I see you both beginning to do these things with your friends. We are so lucky to be surrounded by wonderful people with our neighbors, friends at the Atrium, your schools, Karate, everywhere we go. Thank goodness!

You should also know that I have been very blessed with friends throughout many phases of my life. So many people are special to me that I can not mention them all in fear of the fact that I may leave one out! And I do not ever want to hurt my friend's feelings. You will feel blessed with your friends some day, too if you are only a fraction as lucky as I have been!

One quick story from the week:

About 6:30am this week, I heard a noise coming from the boy's bedroom. Joshua had just crawled into our bed a little bit before, so I knew it was not him. As I walked into the bedroom, Luke was sitting on the floor in front of his dresser, putting a new pull up on. He explained that he woke up and could not get to the bathroom fast enough so there was pee in his pull up. He was certainly taking care of himself. Not only did he put a new pull up on, but he put his pajama bottoms back on, crawled back into bed, and said, "I am all set now." Then, he went back to sleep until 8 am. What a little guy! Luke is wearing underwear all day now! Way to go, Luke! He wears a pull up at night, but just about every morning it is dry when he gets up! Yeah Luke!

21 Years of Wedded Bliss!

Dear Joshua and Luke,

Love is still in the air this week as Dad and I celebrate our 21st wedding anniversary! As I told you today, the best thing about our marriage is the two of you! Dad and I met 23 years ago at the Speakeasy in Breese, Illinois. Daddy asked me to dance with him. After one dance, we could not stop. We danced all night long, and daddy called the next day. We met at Speakeasy the next weekend, and we have spent nearly every day together since that time. Not quite a year later, we were engaged to be married. (We were engaged on the way to Branson, MO! No wonder that holds a special place in our hearts!) Eight months after that, we were married at St. Mary's Church where daddy grew up. Daddy wanted to get married right away, but I needed a little more time to have things the way that I wanted.

Even thought things have worked out so good for Daddy and me, please don't meet girls in bars. And if you do...please don't marry them. Or if you do...you will have to wait until you are 30!

We were so lucky to have Grammy and Papa here to play with you so that we could go out to dinner. Mom chose Lonestar. It was nice to get out just the two of us, but of course ~ mostly what we talked about were the two of you. Not a big surprise.

Luke celebrated Valentine's Day at school this week. He was so proud to take flowers and a special valentine to Miss Diana. He loves her so much. It makes me so happy to see how much he cares for her. Luke is so happy going to his "school" every day. The picture is of his class enjoying Valentine cupcakes. Joshua loved taking flowers and a special valentine to his two teachers, too. He made cards for so many friends at school, too. Joshua and Luke made a record number of cards and valentines this year.

We need special prayers this week for your grandparents. Please pray for Papa Ed. He is struggling and not feeling so good. Papa Mort is having a harder time walking each day. Tomorrow he is getting a lift chair. We were lucky that they came to visit today. Luke patted Papa Mort's leg several times, and said, "I will hold his hand and help him." He is so sweet. Please keep Papa Ed and Papa Mort in your special prayers this week. And also Grammy and Nana.

I love you more today than yesterday.

Love,

Mama

In Love .........

Dear Joshua and Luke,

Yes, Joshua is in love again. He has been in love many times through the years. I think his first love was Jasmine. It was love at first sight when they met at a weekly kindermusic class. Joshua kissed her, and she kissed him, along with a sweet embrace that only one-year olds could do. The very first birthday party that Joshua went to was Jasmine's, and they were good friends for a while. Jasmine even came to Joshua's first and second year old birthday parties. Then, there was Aurelia in the Mother's Day Out program last year. Aurelia moved here from Germany, and again - love at first sight. She moved in mid-year, and her and Joshua immediately hit it off. They had several play dates together. Each day when Daddy picked up Joshua, Aurelia and Joshua would be holding hands and sweetly saying "Goodbye." Many a days Joshua would come home and say, "Mom, I am going to marry Aurelia someday."

There have been a few loves here and there, but for now Paige has his heart. He told me how beautiful she looked in her pink and red dress. "And she always has a bow in her hair, mom. I want her to be my valentine." If you see the picture that Joshua drew of Paige and him, you can see the sweet little bow on top her head. How darling! He told me all about Paige's pink dress with red dots on it. I am sure that there will be many more in the years to come........Joshua is a sweetheart and full of love for so many people. Luke - You are definitely following in your brother's footsteps in this area of life. But let's keep in mind that you are not allowed to get married until you are 30...so that means you can start dating when you are say....25! :)

I love you both so much.

Love,
Mama
